Piece of My Heart Musical Review

One of the best things I've seen recently in the theater is Piece of My Heart (The Bert Berns Story) off Broadway. It's in a limited run until the end of August...so check out my review and get your tickets SOON!!

The show tells the story of Bert Berns, a largely forgotten songwriter from the 60's who died at only 38. In the present day, his daughter is fighting for control over his songs and his legacy.

I was pretty excited for this show because it has more than a few big Broadway names: Leslie Kritzer (of Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Sondheim on Sondheim, Catered Affair), Zak Resnick (Mamma Mia), and Linda Hart (of Catch Me If You Can, Hairspray), and Teal Wicks (Wicked). Add in a few classics like "Twist and Shout", "I Want Candy" and "Piece of My Heart" and I was on board!

I'll be honest-the first act was a bit scattered and the framing device didn't work for me. Whenever we got to an exciting part of Bert's life, it seemed like the daughter had to sing a little in the present. Usually, the first act is a lot better (more time to work on it?) than the second, so I didn't have high hopes for the rest of the musical.

Luckily, the second act was amazing and leagues better than the first. The framing device of the daughter really came together in the finale (I won't spoil it-trust me, it's moving).

Piece of My Heart is definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of musical biopics and/or any of Bert Bern's hits. Throughout, the production quality was very high with the level of dancing and talent for only an off-Broadway price.

Tickets are available for student rush for $26.50 at the box office with a valid ID. I was able to get tickets for about $50 with a preview discount code, too, so sign up for their mailing list & be on the lookout!
