Hi! If you're packing for college for the first time, I am going to be giving you a few tips in a 3 part series! I hope you can avoid some of the mistakes my friends and I made!
1. Don't get an all new wardrobe right before school. Definitely get a pair of jeans or a nice top to wear so you feel confident, but try to hold off on spending big bucks before orientation. School culture in terms of what's "in" or cool can vary so much from what you are used to at home. You may not necessarily want to conform to that culture, but it's good to know what you're working with. Just weather-wise, it may also be different than you expect. (During University of Miami's summer program, I used a hoodie for cold summer nights way more than I was expecting!)
2. Don't bring books. I had SO many friends who had to throw away or leave behind books that they had never even opened that year. It can get really busy between school work and fun stuff to carve out that time. If you have a few days at the end of the term, you can get books with your school ID from the library!
3. Consider the campus when buying shoes. I love wedges, but my college campus was full of cobblestones. 2 inch wedges + cobblestones = danger!! As a freshman, you will also probably have 8 am classes...which means running across campus in heels! Rain boots also can come in handy for old campuses that may experience flooding at the slightest sprinkle.
