Derby Day Brunch: Cocktails

I know, I know, you can go old-school for the Kentucky Derby and serve mint juleps. Today, I wanted to show an alternative if you just don't like mint juleps (or have any bourbon on hand).

This is great if you like sweet mixed drinks, and you can really quickly make this one as it only has a few ingredients!

1.5 ounces London Dry Gin
1.5 ounces Apricot Brandy
1/4 ounce grenadine
Juice of 1/2 lemon

Whenever I make a drink, it's so much easier to gather all the parts of the drink I'll need at the beginning. So, bring out the handles and your equipment (measuring glass, cocktail shaker, drinks, ice cubes).

Next up, put the ice in your shaker. If you have a small cocktail shaker, this is incredibly important. Otherwise, you may end up having way too much liquid to add in the ice. Avoid the whole situation by putting the ice in first!

Measure out your ingredients and pour into the cocktail stirrer. If you haven't tried a drink yet, I would really suggest only making one drink at a time. Although I love Pinterest, I have found some of the worst tasting cocktail recipes. If it's great, taking that extra 5 minutes won't hurt. If it's terrible, you aren't forcing your friends to deal with it.

After you're done putting all the ingredients in the shaker, make sure to attach the cap securely and then shake as hard as you can away from you.

Then, you only stop when you start to see the outside of the shaker get frosty. Check out the difference between the last two photos to get an idea of what I mean.

Last but not least, make sure to nicely display your cocktails! We eat (and drink!) with our eyes, so be sure to use cute Kentucky Derby glasses.
